Case Study

Last year, a homeowner called who was looking to save energy and improve the indoor comfort of his 2,600 ft. home. After a quick inspection and testing, it was determined that 1/3 of the home’s heated and cooled air was being lost through leaks in the duct work. This was not only a waste of money, but the efficiency of the air conditioner and furnace were greatly reduced. The duct leakage was also responsible for rooms that never got warm enough in the winter or cool enough in the summer.
In less than four hours the Aeroseal equipment was set up and from one injection point in the furnace room, the home’s entire duct system was sealed. Post measurement tests found that Aeroseal had reduced overall duct leakage from 441 CFM (cubic feet per minute) to 16 CFM – a reduction of more than 96%.

Using records recorded by the home’s programmable thermostat, the homeowner was able to determine the annual savings obtained by having his home Aerosealed. He set the thermostat to 21 degrees and compared the operation of his furnace before and after the process. By comparing two days that had similar weather conditions, he found that the furnace turned on 11 times before the system was Aerosealed and only 7 times after. The furnace run times during the similar 24-hour period also dropped by about four hours.

With this data comparison, the homeowner determined that the Aeroseal process reduced annual heating and cooling expenses by about $600 – a two-year return on investment. “This is real tangible evidence that the process works,” said the homeowner. “My wife – an eternal skeptic – has noted that the house has felt warmer and more consistent in temperature with more heat coming through the vents.
